Australian Institute for Innovative Materials (AIIM)

The Australian Institute for Innovative Materials (AIIM) is a purpose-built facility at the University of Wollongong's Innovation Campus to help transform multi-functional materials research into commercial reality.

The researchers at AIIM are at the cutting edge of developing and applying new and innovative materials.

AIIM is the first facility that bridges the gaps between breakthroughs, prototyping and commercialisation.

The multi-disciplinary focus of the Institute brings together biologists, clinicians, chemists, physicists engineers and materials scientists.

AIIM comprises the following research organisations:

  • The Intelligent Polymer Research Institute (IPRI)
  • The Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Electromaterials Science (ACES)
  • The Institute for Superconducting and Electronic Materials (ISEM)
  • The University of Wollongong Electron Microscopy Centre (EMC)

[Music]

[Speaker 1]: When the idea has you. Not when you have the idea, but when the idea has you, you can't stop. But you can go further if you have a group of other people who are working with you.

[Music]

[Speaker 2]: We are going through what we are calling to the 4th Industrial Revolution.

[Speaker 3]: How do we keep on innovating in order to sustain our way of life today?

[Music]

[Speaker 4]: The biggest obstacle that we face is setting out to secure talent.

[Speaker 3]: How do we actually attract and retain the best and the brightest?

[Speaker 4]: We've got students that come out of the university. We've got people from the local economy that want to have a great lifestyle.

[Music]

[Speaker 5]: Once you've found great people. We need to hang on to them.

[Speaker 6]: That's our company's focus. Developing those people, letting them shine, and that's what creates amazing things.

[Speaker 7]: When an organization clearly cares about its people, they're less afraid to fail because they feel that backing to be able to give things a go.

[Speaker 8]: Any kind of pioneering adventure is really, really hard. But Mastery will come if you persist.

[Music]

[Speaker 9]: When I walked through the doors in the morning I smiled.

[Speaker 8]: To see the view and the light and the way the building was designed.

[Speaker 10]: Spaces that are a test bed and a playground and a living laboratory.

[Speaker 11]: Collaboration, partnership, shared the vision, shared the dream.

[Speaker 12]: And it's the kind of place where generally the best idea does win, so that fosters people to be more creative.

[Speaker 13]: Your environment shapes your mindset and how do you go about your work.

[Speaker 14]: I think it helps you to dig a little bit deeper. To be able to just step out and feel a sense of place, not just purpose.

[Speaker 15]: We're so lucky that we've got this space.
